چکیده

Methods This study was a laboratory investigation approved by the animal use committee at our institute. Twelve farm-bred swine weighing between 20 kg and 25 kg were anesthetized with tiletamine/zolazepam and xylazine. The animals were exposed to TASER X26 discharge with one device or two darts (n = 5) in single group and with two devices or four darts (n = 5) in double group. The sham control group (n = 2) were studied using the same protocol as that used for animals in study groups except that they were not exposed to any TASER X26 discharges during the experiments. Hemodynamic parameters were obtained at predischarge, at 10, 30 and 60 minutes post-discharge. Blood parameters were obtained at pre-discharge and at 60 minutes post-discharge. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed.

Repetitive TASER X26 discharge resulted in adverse physiologic events with a dose-response relationship related to the duration of discharge in anesthetized swine model.

The objectives of our study were to investigate the dose-response relationship of the TASER X26 discharge duration in an anesthetized swine model. Fourteen swines were anesthetized and then exposed to TASER X26 discharge for 5 sec (n = 5) or for 10 sec (n = 6). The sham control group (n = 3) was anesthetized and studied using the same protocol except TASER X26 discharges during the experiments....

TASER X26 discharges in swine produce potentially fatal ventricular arrhythmias.

OBJECTIVES Data from the authors and others suggest that TASER X26 stun devices can acutely alter cardiac function in swine. The authors hypothesized that TASER discharges degrade cardiac performance through a mechanism not involving concurrent acidosis. METHODS Using an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)-approved protocol, Yorkshire pigs (25-71 kg) were anesthetized, paralyz...

Acute effects of TASER X26 discharges in a swine model.

BACKGROUND Very little objective laboratory data are available describing the physiologic effects of stun guns or electromuscular incapacitation devices (EIDs). Unfortunately, there have been several hundred in-custody deaths, which have been temporally associated with the deployment of these devices. Most of the deaths have been attributed to specific cardiac and metabolic effects. We hypothes...

Taser X26 discharges in swine: ventricular rhythm capture is dependent on discharge vector.

BACKGROUND Data from our previous studies indicate that Taser X26 stun devices can acutely alter cardiac function in swine. We hypothesized that most transcardiac discharge vectors would capture ventricular rhythm, but that other vectors, not traversing the heart, would fail to capture the ventricular rhythm. METHODS Using an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved protoc...

Muscle contraction during electro-muscular incapacitation: A comparison between square-wave pulses and the TASER(®) X26 Electronic control device.

Electronic control devices (including the Advanced TASER(®) X26 model produced by TASER International) incapacitate individuals by causing muscle contractions. To provide information relevant to development of future potential devices, effects of monophasic square waves with different parameters were compared with those of the X26 electronic control device, using two animal models (frogs and sw...
